The rush as the skyline comes into view as you drive over the George Washington Bridge…The incessant din of honking taxis…the nostalgic aroma of roasted chestnuts…the crowds…the lights…there is nothing in the world like the energy of New York City during the holiday season!
Being a native New Yorker, I grew up watching the Macy’s Day Parade, seeing a Broadway play over winter break, watching the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Center. All of these NY memories are part of who I am and I am blessed to pass them along to Brooke.
Over the past several years, we have begun a magical tradition. We spend a fun-filled day in the heart of New York City. Our itinerary always includes a show–whether it is the Rockettes at Radio City, Wicked on Broadway, or this year’s choice–The Nutcracker at the Met at Lincoln Center… a show is a must! Hoping for Hamilton next year but the prices are quite out of our range at this point.
After the show, we enjoy a delicious NYC dinner. This is probably the most difficult decision we encounter. I mean, it’s New York! How could you possibly choose a single restaurant? Our favorite thus far is definitely Carmines, but there are so many others that we love as well.
After dining, we head to Rockefeller Center to see the tree, ice skate, view the magical Christmas windows, enjoy the light show, and of course there is still always room for those roasted chestnuts that have been teasing our noses all day, and perhaps a New York pretzel (usually we end up with one of each)
At the end of the evening, we cab it back to our car and head back upstate. Brooke always falls asleep immediately and I am filled with the joy knowing I am passing along a piece of my heart and soul.
We are so excited about the many winters in New York that we will continue to spend as the years go on.
Do you have a special winter tradition?
I think the Macy’s Day Parade is really amazing. It is worth the experience to watch it during winter. I am glad you were able to visit the place where you came from. As they say, there is no place like home. I think your home is so amazing.
